CERN HST2019 - Day 11

Today was the last day of lectures and it is hard to believe that this incredible experience is almost over.  In this morning's lectures we learned about the engineering challenges when it comes to building the LHC and the possible challenges with the proposed FCC, the Future Circular Collider, from Susana Izquierdo Bermudez.  Michael Benedikt then took over to talk more about the FCC, of which he is one of the lead people.  And we finished things off with a final Q&A with Kristof Schmieden who was so wonderful in answering the many questions of our group.  Kristof was able to clear up so many confusions and misconceptions that had developed over the programme.

This afternoon was our intensive focus group session where we planned out our presentations for tomorrow morning!  Each group has 10 minutes to talk about one of the nine major topics that were presented to us throughout the programme and to look at how we might use the information that we've learned in our classrooms.  We needed a little more than the three hours we were given, but we feel that we have a pretty good presentation and are up first thing tomorrow!

TRIUMF Day 4 - ARIEL and CMMS

 Today was focused on a number of Science Week sessions on ARIEL with the highlight being a tour of the Centre for Molecular and Materials Science (CMMS) with Iain McKenzie. This morning's talks started with a look at what they are looking at for early science investigations at ARIEL, including further research into X-ray FLASH radiotherapy. FLASH radiotherapy is a fascinating potential for curing cancer. Researchers this week have been talking about how it was first done decades ago, had some promising results, but everyone figured it was too good to be true and got shelved in favour of other courses of treatment. Now, FLASH is being seen as the next big thing in cancer treatment, but there is still lots of hesitancy as researchers are still trying to figure out the exact mechanism by which it works. CERN HST2019 - Day 2

This morning was the rush to get our official CERN passes!  Although I wasn't supposed to smile for the photo, I just couldn't help myself!  Jeff showed us how many participants there have been from each country from 1998-2018 and it was amazing to see that there have been over 12000 teachers go through the teacher programmes at CERN with 1351 from the UK, 1039 from Germany, just 116 from the United States, and only 14 from Canada (making myself just the 15th Canadian high school teacher in the programme's 21-year history!) This afternoon we had our first talk from one of the researchers here at CERN, Claire Lee of the Brookhaven National Laboratory.  She did a wonderful presentation on introductory particle physics and did a phenomenal job of answering our group's questions!  After that, we followed things up with our first site visit of the program, the Synchrocyclotron!  There was an awesome digital presentation that told the story of CERN's formation and...

TRIUMF Day 5 - Until we meet again...

 Today, I'm back on a plane for Calgary to meet up with my wife and kids. It's been a great time this week and I can't help but think of what a week-long international high school teacher program, like the ones at CERN, Perimeter Institute, and LIGO, might look like here. It could be an annual event in the summer during Science Week so that teachers could experience different talks from researchers and hear what's coming in TRIUMF's latest work. Day 1 - AM: Safety and Harassment Training (so that teachers have access to all public areas of the site) PM: Tour and overview of TRIUMF (walk around the facility, no deep dives yet, and hear what is done in each area and examples of the research currently going on) Day 2 - AM: Medical Radionuclides (Dr. Valery Radchenko was amazing and speaks passionately and in a way that even someone without any background can understand - hearing him discuss his work at TRIUMF would be a must have for a week like this - it would be grea...
